Fences in Rockledge, Florida

Rockledge sits on a coquina limestone ridge along the Indian River — the geological feature the city is named for.

Rockledge's own residential-fence rule (city Land Development Regulations §81.30) caps an opaque fence forward of the front building setback line at 3 ft; a 4 ft fence is allowed there only if it's no more than 40% opaque and kept clear of vegetation. Elsewhere, the general maximum is 6 ft.

On a corner lot, the city requires the fence to sit back at least 10 ft from the side corner property line (reduced to 5 ft in specific interior-corner-lot configurations) and it can't block corner visibility. A permit is required, and the Building Official has to approve the type, design and location first — the one exception is repairing or replacing up to 20 linear ft of existing fence in any 6-month period, which needs no permit.

The coquina ridge itself is well documented: it is the rock shelf the city sits on along the river. Where that rock sits near or at grade, standard post-hole digging can be harder than a typical sandy Florida lot, and coring or an alternative footing method sometimes ends up being the actual job.

On the river side, ask about the ground first

Near the bluff, whether a post hole hits rock or sand is worth finding out before a price is set on standard digging — it is a reasonable question to ask before, not after, a crew is on site. Not every river-side lot behaves the same way; treat this as a caution to raise, not a guarantee about your specific yard.
